  • Polock On World Cafe: Next

This week's World Cafe: Next artist, Polock, is from Valencia, Spain. The band has always written and sung in English, which its members call "the language of rock." Polock's debut was titled Getting Down From Trees, so it's appropriate that the new album is called Rising Up.

Here, you can hear and download a pair of catchy songs on the World Cafe: Next podcast.

We are major fans of the band The War On Drugs. Today's show presents an epic live performance and interview with leader Adam Granduciel. The band formed in Philadelphia in 2005 and was critically lauded in 2011 for the album Slave Ambient, which put them on the map.

Brett Dennen On World Cafe

The red-haired, California-based singer-songwriter Brett Dennen has come a long way since 2005, when he gave shy, barefoot solo performances around the release of his first album. Now on his fifth, Smoke and Mirrors, he has not only written more outward-looking songs, but he also presents them with a band in a more commercially viable way.

Black Lips Live from World Cafe Live 4/18 @ Noon

Atlanta-based rock band Black Lips released their latest album, Underneath the Rainbow, this March with a

twist on their garage rock sound. With it being their ninth full-length, the band decided to focus its sound following 2011’s Arabia Mountain by working with a producer for the first time during their career. Even though the band is mixing things up a bit, they’re keeping to their raw, gritty roots. The Black Lips are also known for their signature intense live shows, so catch them this Friday at noon on Different Radio.

Lost In The Trees On World Cafe

We have a wonderful performance from Lost In The Trees today with music from their new album Past Life. The band is from Chapel Hill, N.C., and is lead by the charismatic Ari Picker.

Their new album is quite different from their more orchestral folk-pop. It is stripped down, relies on more electronic elements and represents a major evolution for the band. One thing that remains the same is Picker's intensity. We're happy to welcome them back.

World Cafe Next: SACCO

  • SACCO On World Cafe: Next

This week's World Cafe: Next entry is a San Diego psych-rock band started by friends Andy Breihan and John Fredericks. After relocating to Brooklyn, the pair and drummer Chris Tromley recorded their debut within sight of the ocean on Long Island, just to maintain the surf-friendly San Diego vibe.

As for the name SACCO, that's a shout-out to the famous Italian anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti, who were executed in 1927. Hear and download two of the band's songs as part of the World Cafe: Next podcast.
