Greg Townson has played his share of instrumental music since the mid-1980’s; Outfits such as the Essentials, Salamanders, and Hi-Risers have been privy to Greg’s musical talent. He’s also produced an album by Swiss roots-rockers Hillbilly Moon Explosion back in 2011, and is currently co- guitarist with Eddie Angel in Los Straitjackets, who have just completed an album backing the one and only Nick Lowe. Greg’s third LP, “Travelin’ Guitar” was released last week on the Greg’s own label, 2-Bit records. Whereas his first two LP’s were vocal, this is a strictly instrumental LP encompassing multiple styles and influences. Six songs are new Townson originals, along with covers including the Bar-Kay’s ‘Soul Finger’, The Theme from ‘Jaws’, a medley (The Rock-a-Teens ‘Woo Hoo’ combined with Buddy Holly’s ‘Holly Hop’), Sam Cooke’s ‘You Send Me’ and ‘Fishin’ Hole’ - the theme from the Andy Griffith Show! Greg also takes on traditional Peruvian (“Yurac Sisa”) and Korean (“Milyang Arirang”) forms, as well as Latin rhythms in “Carnavalito”. Greg is backed up on bass and drums by his long-time collaborator Todd Bradley on all but one track, which features Los Straitjackets/Outta Sites member Pete Curry on bass/drums. Tune in to the Whole Lotta Shakin’ Radio Show on Saturday May 6th at 4pm as Greg, along with Todd Bradley will be Mike’s in-studio guests.
The CD release party for “Travelin’ Guitars’ is at 9pm on Saturday, May 13th at Abilene Bar & Lounge, 153 Liberty Pole Way, Rochester. Greg Townson will be backed by The Townsmen featuring Todd Bradley, Alex Cote & Alex Patrick. 6th at 4pm eastern
