Mark Grube

Host of Mystery Train

I got started in radio at SUNY Fredonia at WCVF and stayed with it after college as a volunteer at WRUR, and, for a while, at WJZR. Meanwhile, I worked part time at WXXI's Reachout Radio and 'produced' Doug Curry's other show (I pressed record on the reel to reel and edited tape with a razor blade). I also had a jazz show called What's New for 10 or so years. Now I host Mystery Train and ask for money during the pledge drives.

Romance Without Finance

Charlie Parker

That's the title of a tune Charlie Parker recorded 70 years ago, along with the guy who wrote it, guitarist and singer Lloyd "Tiny" Grimes. The rhyming lines are shoehorned in a bit, describing the title situation as "a nuisance," one that "just don't make sense." Not exactly Hallmark card material with Valentine's Day approaching, but something to consider as we head through a week of fundraising on WRUR.

Ira Gershwin's MOJO

Credit 45cat.com

"'MOJO is a commonplace part of the rhetoric of the culture of a substantial portion of the American people. As a figure of speech, the concept of having, or not having, one's MOJO working is not something in which any one person could assert originality, or establish a proprietary right." So the court ruled in Stratchborneo vs. Arc Music in 1973. The defendant?
