Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition

The Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition honors the memory of Eastman’s beloved German professor, Jessie Kneisel, and is made possible through the extraordinary generosity of Eastman alumnus George McWhorter. The competition is held annually in May with the preliminary round in March. The preliminary round is judged by the entire Voice, Opera and Vocal Coaching faculty, while the finals are judged by an invited distinguished guest. Substantial cash prizes are awarded to both the top four singers as well as the top four pianists. 274-3000

Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra Spring Concert

The Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra (HYSO), directed by Casey Springstead, performs its spring concert. The program includes Von Suppé’s Overture to "The Poet and the Peasant," "Danza del Sol" by Kevin Day, and selections from Berlioz’s "Symphonie Fantastique." HYSO violinist Mia Sakonju plays the third movement of Bruch’s Violin Concerto in G Minor and HYSO cellist Joanna Frank plays the first movement of Elgar’s Concerto for Cello in E Minor. Join us this mother's day on Sunday, May 12th for some music and drinks! The program includes pieces based on stories and fairy tales...but these aren't your mother's usual fairy tales. Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf and a few other pieces by underrepresented composers will be performed by current Eastman students. A cash bar is included and tickets range from $10-20. Tickets are free for students who show their university ID.

Penfield Symphony Orchestra will present its “Americans in Paris” concert with special support from a Monroe County Midsized Arts Grant. The concert will be led by guest conductor Dr. Jared Chase. The concert will feature music by Arnaud, Williams, Prokofief, Boyer, Boulanger, Dukas, and Gershwin. Julian Chumacero, Jo Amish Young Artist Competition Winner, will perform the first movement from Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1. Choirs from Nazareth University and Penfield High School will join us in John Williams’s Hymn to the Fallen as we honor, on June 6, 2024, the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings of World War II. 5858720774

Brighton Symphony Orchestra Spring Celebration Concert

Conducted by Jonathan Allentoff, this concert will feature composer-in-residence Emmanuel Sikora, flute soloist Philip Nash, and the Bach Children's Chorus in residence at the Kanack School of Musical Artistry. The Washington Post has described Sikora's music as “an appealing melding of the romantic and the contemporary, unselfconscious and unpretentious.” The program includes the world premiere of Sikora’s Symphony in E Major and works by Arlen, Bizet, Ellington, Gottschalk, John, Kidd, and Tchaikovsky. The concert's finale will pay tribute to the 150th anniversary of Bizet composing the opéra comique masterpiece, Carmen. 585-490-9351
