It is with great sadness that we are reporting the passing of  Robert "Heavy Metal Bob" Stiewe on May 16th, 2018. Bob was the host of the Academy of Shred, which he hosted since 2003 on WRUR. He owned and operated Heavy Metal Records in Webster until this past April. He is survived by his loving wife Jan and his two step daughters Cori and Kelli, as well as many many friends he considered family. A special celebration of life will be held at the convenience of the family. Donations to the Benincasa House would be greatly appreciated.

Your Favorite Summer Jams

Earlier this week, we asked you for your favorite summer jams — the feel-good music that'll carry you through unrelenting news cycles, flat LaCroix, and incessant reminders from your mom ("HAVE YOU PUT ON SUNSCREEN YET?"). We loved your choices, from the sultry Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa song "One Kiss" to Korean boy band BTS's "Fake Love." More importantly, we appreciated your enthusiasm: "It bangs" was a common comment, along with "It slaps" and "IT BUMPS IN THE WHIP." (We may have learned some new terms).

Romance Without Finance

That's the title of a tune Charlie Parker recorded 70 years ago, along with the guy who wrote it, guitarist and singer Lloyd "Tiny" Grimes. The rhyming lines are shoehorned in a bit, describing the title situation as "a nuisance," one that "just don't make sense." Not exactly Hallmark card material with Valentine's Day approaching, but something to consider as we head through a week of fundraising on WRUR.

Ira Gershwin's MOJO

Feb 4, 2014

"'MOJO is a commonplace part of the rhetoric of the culture of a substantial portion of the American people. As a figure of speech, the concept of having, or not having, one's MOJO working is not something in which any one person could assert originality, or establish a proprietary right." So the court ruled in Stratchborneo vs. Arc Music in 1973. The defendant?
